Just and Sinner Podcast

On today's program, I discussed the history and theology of Mormonism. I discussed Mormon apologetics, and the errors in their manner of thinking and argumentation. This should serve as an introduction for those who live in areas that are heavily populated by Mormons and aren't familiar with their beliefs, especially for those who want to bring the gospel to those who are in the LDS movement.

On this week's program, I spent the hour discussing a number of different issues surrounding the nature of preaching. I began with the question, "Should a pastor preach a sermon that is all law?" This led to a number of further questions surrounding preaching and law and gospel.

On today's program, I was joined by my wife Lisa Cooper to discuss family worship. We talked about the three most important aspects of family worship: prayer, catechesis, and hymnody. We discussed the practices that we have used ourselves, relevant Biblical texts, and contemporary resources to help in this practice.

On today's program, I was joined once again by Rev. Lewis Polzin as we continued our discussion of Henry Eyster Jacobs' book A Summary of the Christian Faith. In going through the ordo salutis, we approached the topic of regeneration. This is, in my opinion, one of our best programs, as we addressed a number of extremely important topics including: the nature of regeneration, infant faith, baptism, repentance, the fruits of repentance, and the importance of pastoral care in the application of law and gospel to the individual.

Don't worry, I have not suddenly abandoned sola fide, but on today's program I discussed some problems with James White's recent comments on the doctrine of justification in Genesis 12-15. White purports that Abraham was not justified until the covenant cutting ceremony of Genesis 15 in light of his interpretation of Romans 4. I take him to task on several of these points, and demonstrate that justification does not have to be spoken of as only a past-tense reality. This outlines one of the differences between a Lutheran view and many Reformed perspectives on justification.
